Great graphics,cropped price

With its cropping and tilting tools, Elements is similar to the more expensive Photoshop.

When it comes to editing photos and other digital images, Adobe Photoshop is in a class by itself. However, with its advanced features and $609 price, it's meant for graphics professionals, not home computer users. Now, with Adobe Photoshop Elements ($99; $30 rebate for registered Photoshop LE and Photo Deluxe users; 800-833-6687), Mac and Windows users can get the best of Photoshop in an affordable, easy-to-use program.

Elements looks like Photoshop in many ways. It has the standard tools for cropping pictures, drawing on images, adding captions and so on, but its interface is designed for those new to image editing. Tabs give you quick access to tools and functions. Click the File Browser tab for a thumb-nail view of every graphic on your hard drive. Click the Recipes tab for a series of step-by-step instructions that show you how to work with the various features. Other tabs show you filters and effects you can apply to a picture, colors you can use for drawing and hints about each tool you might use.

Elements also has more sophisticated features. The background eraser lets you delete, for example, the sky behind the birds in a photo; the Photomerge feature allows you to stitch a series of images into one big picture.

If you are looking for a powerful program to improve or alter digital photos or create photographic artwork, but you aren't a graphics pro, Elements is a solid choice.
